The 23rd of August - a delicate novel

It is August 13th, an unusually hot summer day. Jess is 41 and dying. All treatments have been stopped. Because of the morphine, reality and dream, past and present float like in a kaleidoscope. Jess' two children, Nick and Penny, her very different closest friends Klara and Marion, her parents who have already been severely tested by life, and her faithful more-than-a-friend Jim keep vigil at her deathbed, all with their own fears, hopes and memories, and especially many unanswered questions. Death is very present, no matter how hard everyone tries to ignore it, as if it will make him leave. Jess is already on the edge between life and death, and looks back, on motherhood, friendship, love, on how her world once consisted only of spring, love and a no doubt bright future until she met the father of her children, a relationship that quickly went in a dark direction and that eventually left her with a big secret. And she doesn't have much time left...

Moms in Jail - how to be a mom behind bars?

Coming up!

Being a woman behind bars was strenious for centuries and still women are not treated equally as men. Worldwide, nearly 7 out of 100 prisoners are women, 80 percent is a mom, some even grandmothers, some have as many as 8 children when they get arrested.

But (how) can you be a mom from behind bars? And càn you even be a good mom when you have committed crimes like murder? And, how can any mom kill her own child, and what if your child attempted to kill you? Or, what if your child is the one behind bars? Can you blame genetics and epigenetics? Is 'a bad childhood' an excuse for everything? And finally: what about those thousands of children, maybe to most vulnerable victims of all crimes.

Read and listen to 11 of their life stories and comments from their children, and judge for yourself.
